Top surgery cost abroad: the questions to ask before you book

Comparing top surgery prices between clinics and countries is genuinely difficult, because "the price" can mean very different bundles of what's included. These are the questions worth asking any provider before you pay a deposit.

"What exactly is included in that number?"

Ask specifically whether surgeon fees, hospital/theatre fees, anaesthesia, and the hospital stay are all bundled into the quoted price, or whether any are billed separately after surgery. Some clinics quote only the surgeon's fee and add hospital costs afterward — a significant difference in the final bill.

"Is accommodation part of the package, or arranged separately?"

If accommodation isn't included, ask for a realistic estimate of nightly rates near the hospital and how many nights you're likely to need — this can add hundreds of dollars that a bare "surgery only" quote won't reflect.

"What happens if a revision is needed?"

Ask directly whether minor revisions within a defined window (commonly 12 months) are covered by the original fee, partially discounted, or charged at full price. Get this in writing — it matters more than almost any other line item if you end up needing one.

"What's your deposit and refund policy?"

Confirm exactly when a deposit becomes non-refundable, and whether a missed or postponed date results in losing the deposit outright or applying it to a new date. Reasonable policies exist somewhere in between "fully refundable anytime" and "non-refundable the moment you pay."

"Who is actually performing the surgery?"

In some markets, the surgeon shown in marketing material isn't necessarily who operates on every patient. Ask directly, and ask for confirmation in writing once your date is booked.

A few red flags worth noticing

• Pressure to pay a deposit before you've had any consultation with the actual surgical team.
• A quote that's dramatically lower than every other provider you've compared, with no clear explanation of what's different about it.
• Reluctance to put package inclusions and refund terms in writing.

None of this means the lowest-cost option is automatically the wrong choice — many are entirely legitimate. It means the questions above are worth asking of anyone, including us, before you commit.
